What is Hinduism
Hinduism which is with over a billion followers the third religion of the world, is for outsiders often a very complex belief with an almost endless palet of Gods. Followers of Hinduism try to life according to the Sanatana Dharma which means something like eternal law.
When you look a bit closer a lot of these gods are incarnations or different forms of the tree main gods also called the trinity / trimurti of Hinduism and their spouses;
Brahma the creator
Brahma the creator is the God where everything start and ends (the universe comes from his belly button and will also disappear there).
Vishnu the preserver
Vishnu is the preserver. When the the world is in trouble than Vishnu (or one of his incarnations) will come and rescue it.
Shiva the destroyer
Shiva is the hottempered god of distruction and creation. (After distruction comes creation). Without Shiva the universe wouldn't exist. Shiva's powerful dance made the circumstances favourable for creation. Don't mess with Shiva he won't doubt to kill. In one of his angry attempts he even cut of a head of Brahma.
There are over 1000 different names for Shiva. Read more about Shiva
Branches within Hinduism
Within the umbrella of Hinduism its very common that devotees have a "favorite" god and become followers of this specific god. There are various sects or "main" gods to believe in. Shivaism / Shaivism is the oldest branch of Hinduism, Shaktism (Shiva's wive is Shakti), we know the Krishna (an avatar of Vishnu) followers, we have Vaishnavism (followers of Vishnu). All these different "believes" fit within the umbrella of Hinduism. Maybe that is why after Buddhism spread through Asia by adapting Buddhism within Hinduism it could work on remarkable come back
