Siddhashrama mentioned in Valmiki Ramayana
In the Valmiki Ramayana, Viswamitra explains to Ram and Laxman, the origin of Siddhashrama.
In old time a mighty demon called Bali wanted to do a big yajna to increase his strenght and rule the worlds. Indra, the king of the gods got scared and went to Vishnu for help. Vishnu promises his help and transforms himself into a dwarf and visits the demon Bali who is doing his Vajna. The demon Bali asks the dwarf what he can do for him and Vishnu aks for two and a half steps of space to praise the gods. Bali agrees to this request, but then Vishnu suddenly changes into a giant form. Taking two steps he covered earth and sky. Vishnu then asks Bali where to put his other half step. Bali offers his body for the last half step. Vishnu is so pleased with this gesture of Bali that he gives a blessing in which he proclaims this place sacred and names it Siddhasrama.
