The Maghe Sankranti festival is held at the first day of the holy month of Magh (arround the mid of January (12-14)). Maghe Sankranti celebrates that the warmer days are coming.  The festival is also seen as a new year that is coming.

Maghe Sankranti is one of the three occasions in a year that hindu's should bath in holy rivers. The bathing is done in the early morning mostly at thirtha's where two holy rivers colide like for example the Barah Chhetra temple.
It is also the day that Bhisma a main character from the Mahabharata, he is the grandfather of the Pandavas and the Kauravas died beeing 350 years old during battle with Arjuna which he would have won if Lord Krishna wouldn't have interferred, Bhisma dies punctured full with arrows. It is said that anyone who dies on this die will go to heaven.
In Nepal the festival is also connected to a legend from Bhadgoan (Bhaktapur) where a business man despite selling a lot seamsame seeds the supply never finishes. When the suprised business man goes through the seeds he finds an idol of Vishnu. Since then on Maghe Sankranti Til Madhav is whorshipped to continue to supply the people of Bhaktapur with food.
