The Changu Narayan Temple is the oldest temple construction in the Kathmandu Valley. The pagoda style temple which is an UNESCO world heritage site is beautifully located on top of a hill four kilomters north of Bhaktapur.

The Changu Narayan Temple is located on the end a hill top ridge with a good view over the valley. In the older days a fort was located on the same ridge.

The big kneeling Garuda (Vishnu's vehicle) in front of the temple is said to be from the 5 th century. As well as the oldest sankskrit descriptions of nepal. One of the tablet is the oldest known reference about performing "Sati". Which is a hindu ritual where a woman (according to this tablet) voluntarily cremates herself alive when her husband has passed away. For a picture of the descriptions click here
