Patan is said to be found by the Buddhist emperor Ashoka / Asoka as Lalita Patan while he visited Nepal with his daughter Charumati. Who stayed behind in Nepal.

Ashoka Stupas of Patan

The city of Patan south of Kathmandu in the Lalitpur district of Nepal has a big stupa on each of the wind directions of the city. The stupa's are said to be erected by the mighty Emperor Ashoka who made buddism his state religion spreading the religion all over northern India.

Kumbeswhar Temple

The Kumbeswhar Temple lies a few hundres metres north of Patan's famous Durbar Square.
The Kumbeswhar temple which is a Shiva temple is one out of three temples in the Kathmandu Valley that has three stories.

A legend says that the moon (soma) erected a Shiva Lingam here to get rid of his terrible sin of having sex with his wifes guru.
